Today, I came across the tragic end of Edward II of England by his nefarious wife, Isabella of France. Neglectful as a Husband, Edward was preoccupied with conquering Scotland. To exacerbate matters, he became more infatuated with a certain Piers Graveston, an English nobleman from Gascony. As homosexuality was viewed as ill-repute -- not to mention that the whole affair was extramarital, Isabella was horribly humiliated.
So, when Edward elicited Isabella for a diplomatic mission to France, she instead defected and brought back an army against him. Later on, Isabella and her new consort Mortimer took over the country, while Edward, deposed, languished in prison until he died.
I bring this story up because I how the names, Edward and Isabella, sounds so familiar. One easily realize that in the Twilight saga, the main characters, Edward Cullen and Isabella Swann, share their names with the former pair of married but terribly estranged couple.
What do you think? Did Stephanie Meyer know about the story of Edward II when she wrote her novels?
